correspondent Vikas Gupta interacted with RK Gupta, Ex-Administrator/Project Officer, Urban local Bodies Department.
VG: What methods have been adopted by the department to keep the town neat and clean?
RK: This is a big body and its job is to make the city neat and clean. The “Swach Bharat Mission” by the PM is the priority of this department and its job is to run the various centrally sponsored schemes. Training is provided to unemployed youth for Self Help Groups and self employment.
VG: What are the works local bodies do in various towns?
RK: The local bodies maintain the lanes and drains, streets and roads, construct Community halls, provide facilities to the inhabitants of the areas, maintain the street lights in the town and remove garbage from the town. They have to maintain the sanitation of towns. Sanitation is must to control epidemics like cholera, dengue, influenza etc.
VG: What is the contribution of Urban Development Department to implement the centrally sponsored schemes?
RK: The Urban Development Department under the administrative wing of JUDA and DUDA sponsor unemployed youth for computer training, and various other trainings like beautician, electrician, mission work, carpenter, and provide materials as well as subsidy for self employment. The cases are then sent to the banks for loans so that they can establish their own business units.
