Continuing our bi-weekly TALK SHOW feature, we are here again with Dr SS Sambyal, Medical Officer, who gives us some important tips about for better health
during the monsoon season not only rejuvenates
every living organism after dealing with the scorching heat of summers but even brings a host of
diseases along with it.

Here are the excerpts. VIKAS SHARMA JAMMU, JUNE 22 VS: The monsoon season arrives with many diseases; please tell us about those diseases? SS: We all love rainy season. It’s full of freshness and greenery. It seems like that all of a sudden, everything becomes lively. Days are full of dark clouds dancing and nights full of frog croaking sounds. But with the monsoon, also come many diseases. Diseases such as: Typhoid, M a l a r i a , Dengue, Respiratory tract infections and Diarrhea. VS: What tips you suggest to avoid these diseases? SS: After following tips, we can avoid these diseases and stay healthy throughout the monsoon season. Drink only filtered water: Rainy season means dirty water getting mixed with fresh water. This causes serious infections and stomach problems. So only drink filtered water. Cook your food thoroughly: Try to avoid raw food in rainy season. Raw foods may contain bacteria and other parasites. Eating raw food in rainy season is an open invitation for diseases. So cook your food thoroughly. Clean your veggies and fruits properly: As we mentioned above, raw foods may contain bacteria and other parasites. So before cooking your food, wash it properly. Washing veggies and fruits also remove toxins and other pollutants. So be sure to wash your food before cooking. Avoid spicy food: People with asthma and diabetes must avoid spicy food during this season. Spicy food can act as a trigger in this season. So go easy on the spices. Use mosquito repellents and mosquito nets: If you have stagnated water near your house, you face a serious threat from mosquitoes. We recommend the use of mosquito repellents and mosquito nets to avoid diseases like malaria and dengue. Eat bitter veggies and less sweet fruits: Have bitter vegetables in your meal such as neem, bitter gourd etc. Bitter veggies keep you clear of infections and allergies. If you don’t like these boiled, prepare a fried meal and add some taste to them. So neem and bitter gourd for health.
Have light dishes if you are a non­vegetarian: Opt for light non­veg dishes like soups and stews instead of going hard on curry and korma. It will also give you, the health benefits of less protein intake and your body will feel fresh. So have a light, non­veg dishes this monsoon.
