Women security huge worry

Young Bites. Dated: 5/26/2017 2:04:26 PM

Safety of women matters a lot whether at home, outside the home or
working place. Last few crimes against women especially rape cases
were very dread and fearful. Because of such crimes, women safety in India
has become a doubtful topic. Women are harassed not only in the night or
evening but also in the day time at their home, working places, or other
places like street, club, etc. It is found through the survey that the reason
of sexual harassment is the lack of gender-friendly environment and
improper functional infrastructure such as consumption of alcohol and
drugs in open area, lack of adequate lighting, safe public toilets, sidewalks,
lack of effective police service, lack of properly working helpline numbers,
etc. A huge percentage of women have no faith that police can curb such
harassment cases. There is an urgent need to understand and solve this
problem of women safety so that they can also grow equally like men in
their own country. Domestic violence is a serious threat to women in every
society, be it rich or poor, developed or under-developed, young or old,
highly educated or illiterate. As per the State Women’s Commission, Jammu
and Kashmir, 1600-1700 cases of domestic violence are reported every year.
Surprisingly, majority of these cases are reported in Kashmir, a Muslim
dominated society. Most cases of domestic abuse are usually over demands
for dowry, interference from in-laws, misunderstandings between the
couple or birth of female babies. The administration of Shri Maharaja
Hari Singh Hospital (SMHS) claims to have started registering increasing
number of cases of female torching as well as an alarming increase in the
rate of female suicides. Some may disregard these findings, claiming that
our religion prohibits such actions and hence, women in our society are
treated with love and respect. Sadly this is as true as cheetahs being slow.
Religion isn’t the problem, it is the environment we are brought up in. In
our society, women are expected to do everything from earning money, to
doing house hold chores, to raising children and taking care of the whole
family. When the girl is married, she is thought of as a helping hand and not
as a daughter in her husband’s house. While women bear the maximum
brunt of any kind of violence, at the same time they are key stakeholder in
bringing about sustainable peace. Every religion has acknowledged the
strengths and importance of women. “Though she may not match a man
physically but women are bestowed with immense mental strength to take
on any challenge. Throughout the history of evolution of mankind women
have faced and bravely overcome numerous societal challenges and crated
a niche for themselves in every sphere of life. We are passing through a
transition face wherein women have successfully ventured in different
fields and from homemakers are steadily becoming equal partners in
nation’s progress and development. Time has come to break away from the
socio-cultural taboos and give the women their due respect and importance
in the society. As we all know that India is a most famous country all over
the world for its great tradition and culture where women are given most
respected place in the society from the ancient time. It is the country where
women are considered as safer and most respected. Women are given the
place of Goddess Lakshmi in the Indian society. Indian women are found
working in all fields like aeronautics, space, politics, banks, schools, sports,
businesses, army, police, and many more. We cannot say that this country
has no any women concern however we cannot ignore positive points for
women in India.
