Continuing our weekly feature, Talk-Show, we are here today again with Dr. KARUN GUPTA (BDS), he is an Oro-Dental Surgeon, Implantologist and Ex-House Surgeon, Deptt. of Orthodontics at INDIRA GANDHI GOVT. DENTAL COLLEGE, Jammu.
While interacting with the Young Bites, he provided some more details about his specialty.

VS: Dr Karun, will you explain what dental caries is?
KG: Dental caries also known as cavity or tooth decay, which is caused due to bacterial infection. It causes the destruction of hard tis
sue of the teeth and results in demineralization of the teeth.
VS: Bleeding gums are always a big problem, what are the main causes behind the bleeding gum?
KG: There are many reasons behind the bleeding gums, but most of the times, bleeding gums are due to the buildup of plaque at the gum line. This condition is referred as gingivitis or inflamed gums. If plaque is not treated it would harden into tartar, which leads to increased bleeding, and it would result in more adverse form of gum and jawbone disease known as periodontitis.
VS: What other than gingivitis can cause gum bleeding?
KG : The other causes behind the
bleeding disorder are brushing too hard, during pregnancy hormonal changes not flossing correctly, blood thinners, deficiency of vitamin K, tooth or gum related infections, inappropriate dentures or other dental appliances and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.
VS: Explain what is the role of fluoride in tooth?
KG: Prevents de-mineralization: In bacterial infection, bacteria combines with sugar and produces acid that damages the outer covering of tooth or enamel and starts de-mineralization of tooth. Fluoride stop acid from damaging enamel.
Re-mineralization: If there is already some damage due to acid, fluoride will deposits in the dem

ineralized areas and begins strengthening the enamel; a process called re-mineralization
VS: What is the root canal, please explain it?
KG: Root Canal is a treatment carried out in the patient having large cavities that damage the tooth root. The root becomes inflamed and infected in this condition.
VS: Explain step by step what is the procedure of root canal?
KG: There are various steps that have been to be followed for this procedure,
Step 1: First the dentist numbs the tooth by giving local anaesthetic.
Step 2: The opening is made through the crown of the tooth to the decay region or pulp chamber.
Step 3: Then unhealthy tissues and infected cells are removed using special files
Step 4: Then shape the canal so that filling the material can be filled easily
Step 5: Canals are filled with a permanent material
