To prevent accidents, there is a need to put in place an effective monitoring mechanism besides focusing on generating mass awareness regarding various road safety measures.
This was stated by Minister of State for Transport Sunil Sharma, during his exclusive interaction with the Young Bites.

VG: Despite your efforts there are a number of road accidents in hilly areas?
SS: This is not true that there are a number of road accidents in hilly areas, we are trying our best to keep a complete control on these accidents, so that the people can safe journey. In this regard I have directed the transport authorities to focus on enhanced monitoring by the District Road Safety Committee for checking overloading, rash driving etc. which pose a serious threat to precious human lives adding that any laxity in this regard will not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, we have also directed the officers of the department to ensure strict enforcement of the traffic laws and rules to deter habitual violators .It is the duty of the ARTO’s to ensure fitness certification of the vehicles within their jurisdictions strictly as per the laid norms.
VG: What steps have you taken to modernize the transport department?
SS: Modernize is the need of hour and I want to assure you that adequate steps will be taken to strengthen the transport department with modern facilities so that better and efficient transport services are provided to the people especially those living in hilly and far flung areas of the state. Underscoring the need for immediate completion of the computerization process in transport department, I have directed the officers to take necessary steps in this regard so that efficiency, transparency and promptness in the working of the department are ensured.
VG: Many reforms have been introduced in the transport sector, but still long queues could be seen at RTO Jammu, Why?
SS: To end such long queues at the various RTOs, we have directed the concerned authorities to ensure strict adherence to the timelines under the Public Services Guarantee Act for providing services like learners licenses, driving licenses, Registration of vehicles, fitness of vehicles and renewal of driving licenses to the people reiterated that there will be zero tolerance for corruption in the department and any one found indulging in such practices will be dealt with iron hands.
Some more steps has been taken by RTO Kathua for delivering driving licenses through post and asked the other concerned officers to emulate the step in other areas to facilitate the general public.
VG: How you will improve the working of this department?
SS: There are many ways, with which we are committed to improve the working of my department. But, first there are various issues which need to be addressed for improving functioning of the department like addition of staff in existing offices, strengthening of enforcement wing, deployment of armed personnel at check posts and in flying squads and creation of effective flying squads for cities of Jammu and Srinagar.
